How to Make a Screenshot on Mac

Taking a screenshot is a basic yet essential computer skill. On a Mac, it is just as easy to do as on any other computer, and it can be very handy for everything from capturing an image of an error message for technical support to saving a webpage. In this guide, we’ll cover all the methods you can use to take a screenshot on your Mac system.

Method 1: Using Keyboard Shortcuts

Mac offers a variety of keyboard shortcuts to quickly and easily capture screenshots:

Take a Screenshot of the Entire Screen

Step 1: Press Shift + Command + 3.

Step 2: The screenshot will be automatically saved to your desktop.

Take a Screenshot of a Selected Area

Step 1: Press Shift + Command + 4, then drag the crosshair to select the desired area.

Step 2: When you’ve selected the area you want, release the mouse or trackpad button to capture the screenshot.
Step 3: The screenshot will be automatically saved to your desktop.

Method 2: Using the Screenshot App

In macOS Mojave or later, you can use the Screenshot app.

Step 1: Press Shift + Command + 5  (or find the Screenshot app in your Applications folder).

Step 2: Select between capturing the Entire Screen, Window, or Selected Portion.
Step 3 Click Capture.
Step 4: By default, your system saves screenshots to your desktop but you can change this location in the Options menu.

Method 3: Taking a Screenshot of a Specific Window

Step 1: Press Shift + Command + 4 + Space. The pointer will change to a camera icon.

Step 2: Move the camera over a window to highlight it.
Step 3: Click your mouse or trackpad to take a screenshot of a highlighted window.
Step 4: The screenshot will be automatically saved to your desktop.

Method 4: Taking a Screenshot of the Touch Bar

If you have a Mac with a Touch Bar and macOS Sierra 10.12.2 or later, you can capture a screenshot of the Touch Bar using the following command:

Step 1: Press Shift + Command + 6.

Step 2: The screenshot will be automatically saved to your desktop.
