Windows 11 January 2026 Update Breaks Outlook

What IT Teams Need to Know

The January 2026 Patch Tuesday was supposed to kick off the year with important security and stability improvements. Instead, it created a serious productivity issue for many organizations running classic Outlook on Windows 11.

Following the rollout of Windows 11 24H2 and early 25H2 cumulative updates (notably KB5074109), administrators and end users began reporting that Outlook became effectively unusable, freezing, hanging, and even losing unsaved email drafts.

At XEOX, where we work daily with managed endpoints and business-critical email systems, this is exactly the kind of update-induced disruption that RMM tools are designed to detect and mitigate early.

What Happened?

After Microsoft released the January 13, 2026 Patch Tuesday updates, multiple issues surfaced:

  • Random Outlook hangs and freezes
  • Outlook failing to close properly
  • Outlook not restarting after exit
  • Unsaved emails and lost progress
  • Significant user downtime and frustration

The problem appears to primarily affect classic Outlook with POP account profiles on Windows 11 systems that installed KB5074109.

Microsoft later acknowledged the issue in a support advisory, confirming that Outlook may fail to exit correctly and can become unresponsive after the update.

Emergency Fixes — But Not for Outlook

Due to other critical bugs, Microsoft released out-of-band (OOB) emergency updates (KB5077744 and KB5077797). However, these did not resolve the Outlook issue.

As of now:

  • ❌ No official workaround from Microsoft
  • ❌ No hotfix specifically for Outlook
  • ✅ Uninstalling KB5074109 restores functionality

Multiple IT professionals, including managed service providers, confirmed that rolling back the update immediately resolved the problem across affected devices.

Why This Matters for MSPs & IT Teams

This incident highlights a recurring challenge:

Even “mandatory” or “security” updates can severely impact business-critical applications.

Without proactive monitoring, organizations may only notice the problem after:

  • Dozens of user complaints
  • Lost productivity hours
  • Risk of data loss (unsaved emails)

How XEOX RMM Helps Prevent This Scenario

With XEOX RMM, IT teams gain:

🔍 Early Detection
  • Monitor application crashes, hangs, and unexpected behavior post-update
  • Identify patterns across multiple endpoints in real time
🔁 Rapid Remediation
  • Scripted or policy-based rollback of problematic Windows updates
  • Temporary update deferral until stability is confirmed
📢 Proactive Communication
  • Alert affected users automatically
  • Inform stakeholders before issues escalate
🛡️ Controlled Patch Management
  • Test Patch Tuesday updates on pilot groups
  • Prevent widespread deployment of unstable updates

Recommended Actions Right Now

If your environment is affected:

  1. Identify systems with KB5074109 installed
  2. Uninstall the update on impacted machines
  3. Pause further Windows 11 updates temporarily
  4. Monitor Outlook behavior closely
  5. Track Microsoft advisories for an official fix

XEOX customers can automate most of these steps directly through the RMM console.

Conclusion

The January 2026 Outlook outage is a reminder that patch management is not just about security, it’s about stability.

At XEOX, we believe updates should never come at the cost of usability. With the right RMM strategy, IT teams can stay secure and productive, even when Patch Tuesday goes wrong.

If you’d like, we can also:

  • Rewrite this as a customer-facing advisory
  • Create a technical SOP for update rollback
  • Adapt it for LinkedIn or newsletter distribution

Just let us know.
