What is Remote Monitoring & Management (RMM)?

An RMM (Remote Monitoring and Management) tool is used to manage a computer or network from a remote location. Using an RMM tool gives the administrator control over the network, including the ability to install software and manage all activities on a client’s system/network, workstation, server, or endpoint.

THE PURPOSE OF AN RMM TOOL

RMM software provides a solution that helps businesses proactively monitor networks, endpoints and devices remotely. This is also known as remote IT management.

An RMM tool can be used in a hybrid IT environment with a combination of cloud, virtualized and legacy components. All of this makes an RMM tool a very effective support solution.

Due to the many moving parts within a network, considering the number of devices, operating systems, drivers and users, network management can be challenging. Therefore, you want an RMM tool that provides your managed service providers (MSPs) a centralized and consolidated view of all the health in your infrastructure. Over the long-term, it’s much easier and more cost-effective to identify issues in your network before they become major problems.

With a simple infrastructure, streamlined and intuitive workflow, XEOX makes patch management simpler, boosts patch compliance, decreases time spent patching, and allows multi-OS maintenance from a single console.

ADVANTAGES OF AN RMM TOOL

  • Recording data about the customer’s hardware, networks and software.
  • Providing activity data and reports
  • Generating appropriate tickets and alerts when problems occur
  • Monitoring the status of networks and devices

THE HISTORY OF RMM

Fighting the “break-fix” model is a core story in IT. Break-fix means waiting until something stops working before fixing the problem. But the problem with break-fix is that IT teams spend an awful lot of nights trying to fix catastrophic failures with last-minute solutions, while the entire business comes to a standstill.

MUCH better are systems where the IT department can proactively perform maintenance and repair work. They should be alerted as early as possible when something is wrong. RMM is all about providing the IT department with data and early warnings when system status deteriorates.

In the early days of RMM, building such an early warning system required extensive infrastructure and expertise to connect all of a company’s devices. The early RMM solutions could provide some information, but were inconvenient to install and operate. Only large enterprises could afford such proactive IT with remote monitoring. Small businesses, however, were left behind without these enterprise tools.

In the last decade, RMM has grown and matured. Protocols for establishing connections and a lower cost for maintaining connections have made RMM affordable and scalable. Small businesses can now take advantage of RMM solutions directly or engage managed service providers (MSPs) for remote support.

GETTING STARTED

The benefits of RMM software for MSPs are so numerous that it is not surprising that most MSP companies have already implemented a similar solution. Enterprises have unique needs and requirements and no software platform can be perfect in such a situation. It is pointless to try to find an ideal off-the-shelf software system that meets all your business needs. The smart thing to do would be to modify the application for your specific needs, worker skill levels, budget, and other factors. For these reasons, do not hurry and invest in well-publicized trendy solutions. Though these may be widely used, they may not be the best fit for your particular wants. If you have not yet decided on a solution, XEOX is a must try.
