How to Fix Common Windows 10 Problems: A Guide for IT Pros

Windows 10 is well-regarded for its robust performance and advanced features. However, as with any system, it is not immune to issues. For IT pros, tackling these problems can seem daunting. This guide will discuss the methods for troubleshooting and resolving some of the most frequently encountered issues with Windows 10.

Update Problem

Windows 10’s dynamic nature and continuous evolution can be a double-edged sword. While automatic updates are often essential for patching security vulnerabilities and introducing new features, they can occasionally lead to unexpected issues and complications. Such problems can often have a profound impact on overall system stability and performance, much to the dismay of users and IT specialists alike.

Potential Update Problem

The problems that can arise from Windows 10 updates vary greatly. You might encounter installation issues, where the update process does not complete correctly. There’s also the scenario where post-update, certain features or applications on the system may stop working optimally due to incompatibility with the update.

Worse still, sometimes, Windows updates can cause significant system errors or glitches that can result in prolonged downtime. In rare cases, these updates can even contribute to data loss should they interfere with crucial system files or processes.

Troubleshooting and Fixing Update Problem

The implementation of a fix highly depends on the nature of the problem. One common approach involves disabling automatic updates. To do this, navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Advanced Options. Here, you can turn updates off for a set period of time.

Updates are crucial for maintaining system security and stability, so it is not ideal to keep them off indefinitely. You can also change the configuration to make the updates manually. To achive that do Windows Key + R > services.msc > locate Windows Update > Right click and select Properties > Change the Startup type, either to Manually (if not already selected), or to Disabled

In cases where an already installed update is creating problems, you might have to uninstall and then reinstall the said update. Head over to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Update History > Uninstall updates. Select the problematic update and click the Uninstall button. Restart the machine and then try reinstalling the update.

Microsoft also provides a Windows Update Troubleshooter, a tool designed to automatically detect and resolve update-related issues. You can access it via Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.

Back-ups play a critical role when dealing with update issues. If you don’t currently have a backup routine, you should establish one. Regularly back up crucial data to mitigate the potential loss that can be caused by a problematic update. Make use of system recovery tools like the System Restore Point feature, which can help you roll back your system to a point before the update was installed.

Internet Connection Problems

In the modern digital world, an internet connectivity issue can significantly impact productivity, particularly in professional environments. With Windows 10, there are various factors that can cause internet-related problems, ranging from ISP issues to incorrect network settings, and they can often present complex challenges for IT professionals.

Underlying Causes of Internet Connection Problems

One primary cause of internet connection issues comes from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Occasional outages or service disruptions can occur and can cause temporary loss of internet access.

Local network infrastructure can also become problematic. This includes routers, modems, and other networking hardware. Incorrectly configured network settings on the device can also cause problems, such as incorrect IP configurations or proxy settings.

Furthermore, outdated or corrupt network adapter drivers can impede internet connectivity. If the network driver that allows your computer to connect to the network becomes outdated, or if the driver files become corrupt, it can lead to unstable or non-existent network connections.

How to Fix Internet Connection Problems

Windows 10 comes with built-in tools for diagnosing and resolving internet connection problems. The easiest method to troubleshoot is to use Windows Network Diagnostics. Right-click the network icon on the taskbar and select the Troubleshoot problems option. This initiates an automated process where Windows will begin detecting any network issues and try to fix them.

If the Windows Network Diagnostics doesn’t solve the issue, then the problem might stem from outdated network adapter drivers. IT professionals can easily update these drivers manually:

  1. Go to the Device Manager by typing “device manager” into the start menu or Right-click Start Button > Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Network adapters section by clicking on the arrow next to it.
  3. Right-click on your network adapter, select Update driver.
  4. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software. Windows 10 will then search for and automatically install any available updated drivers.

This process should ensure that your network adapter driver is up to date and remove any issues resulting from outdated drivers.

In addition to these standard fixes, you can also reset the network settings or reinstall the network adapter completely for stubborn network issues. Always remember to check for the simple solutions first, such as making sure all hardware is correctly plugged in and powered on, along with checking if the issue exists on other devices on the same network to help determine where the issue lies.

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)

Blue Screen of Death is probably one of the most notorious windows problems. Luckily there are various ways to fix this issue.

Causes of BSOD

Software issues:

Certain software can sometimes influence system files, configuration, or drivers, which can cause a BSOD. Conflicts between multiple software programs, unsuccessful software installation, or viruses and malware can result in software-related BSODs.

Faulty drivers:

Outdated, incompatible, or corrupt device drivers can cause BSODs. Drivers are crucial since they enable hardware components and the operating system to communicate. Any miscommunication could result in a crash, hence a BSOD.

Hardware issues:

Faulty hardware, in particular, memory problems, hardware running beyond its specification limits (overclocking), incompatible hardware, or even failing hardware can all lead to BSODs.

Troubleshooting and Fixing BSOD

The infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is something many Windows users have encountered, and it’s sure to send a shiver down any IT professional’s spine. The BSOD is a stop or exception error that pops up when the system encounters a problem it cannot recover from, causing it to crash. The primary causes usually include malfunctioning hardware, corrupt software, or problematic drivers.

The first step to fix the issue would be to boot the system in Safe Mode. Safe Mode starts your system with only the essential programs and services required for it to run. Running your machine in Safe Mode can help pinpoint whether the cause of the BSOD is from third-party software or drivers.

To access Safe Mode, restart your device. As soon as your device turns on again, press and hold the power button to force turn off. Repeat this process three times. After the third time, Windows 10 should boot into diagnostics mode. Click Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Once your PC restarts, you’ll see a list of options. Press 4 or F4 to boot in Safe Mode.

Inside Safe Mode, if your device no longer experiences a BSOD, this would suggest that a recent system change (like a software installation or update) could be the culprit. Here, you’ll have the chance to uninstall any recently installed software or updates that could be causing the issue.

In case this doesn’t solve the problem, try the following Steps:

Use Debugging Tools:

Microsoft provides powerful debugging tools designed to analyze and interpret what led to a BSOD. The debugging tool helps “decode” the code and assess the dump file that Windows creates at the moment of the crash.

Steps:

    • Download and install the Windows debugging tool kit from Microsoft’s official site.
    • Run the Windows debugger, and open the dump file which is usually located in the C:/Windows/Minidump folder.
    • After opening the file, run a scan. The scan will provide a detailed analysis of what caused the crash, allowing you to address that specific issue. This process might require advanced technical knowledge as the report can be quite complex.
Update or Uninstall Problematic Drivers:

Errors in drivers are a common cause of BSODs.

Steps:

    • Go to the Device Manager by typing “device manager” into the start menu or Right-click Start Button > Device Manager
    • Check for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark, which are usually indicative of problematic drivers.
    • Right-click a problematic device and choose ‘Update Driver’ or ‘Uninstall Device’ for a fresh installation.
Perform a System Restore:

This method reverts your system to a previous state before the problem occurred, with your files intact.

Steps:

    • Go to the Control Panel by Right-clicking Start button > Control Panel
    • Navigate to Recovery > Open System Restore.
    • Choose a restore point from the list, before when the problems started to occur.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
Perform a Disk and Memory Check:

These checks scan your disk and memory for errors and repair them automatically.

Steps:

    • For disk check, open Command Prompt as an administrator by Right-clicking Start button > Command Prompt (Admin), type chkdsk /f /r, and hit Enter. (If that does not work, make sure every application is properly closed on your device)
    • For memory check, type Windows Memory Diagnostic into the start menu, click on the result and follow the on-screen instructions.
Scan for Malware:

Malware can potentially cause BSODs, and a comprehensive scan can help identify and remove any threats.

Steps:

    • Run your preferred anti-malware tool and ensure it performs a ‘deep scan’ or ‘full scan’.
    • Follow the software’s recommendations to isolate or remove any potential threats.
Update the BIOS:

Updating the BIOS is an advanced step and should be done with caution.

Steps:

    • Identify your BIOS version by Pressing Windows key + R > type: msinfo32 > BIOS Version/Date.
    • Visit the manufacturer’s website, locate the latest BIOS update.
    • Download and install it following the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Apply Windows Updates:

Keeping the system updated can prevent many problems, including the BSOD.

Steps:

    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    • Check for updates. If any are available, download and install them.
    • Restart your system once the updates are installed completely.

Slow Startup

Among the common issues that users might encounter with Windows 10, slow startup is likely one of the most frustrating. The precious minutes lost while waiting for the system to boot up can significantly affect productivity. Factors contributing to slow startup times can be numerous – from excess startup programs to outdated drivers or insufficient disk space.

Potential Causes of Slow Startup

Here are some frequent culprits for a slow startup:

  1. Excess startup programs: Software applications that are set to launch upon system startup can greatly extend boot times. Not all of these programs need to be initialized at startup and hence significantly contribute to slowing down the system boot.

  2. Outdated system drivers: Drivers are essential components that allow the operating system to communicate with the hardware. Outdated or corrupt drivers can interfere with this communication process and slow down the system startup.

  3. Insufficient Disk Space: Available storage can significantly impact the overall performance of your Windows 10 PC, including startup times. Without the necessary space, the system might struggle to carry out basic tasks efficiently, leading to lag.

Strategies for Fixing Slow Startup

Luckily, Windows 10 provides several built-in features to help mitigate slow startup time problems:

1. Enable Fast Startup:

This is a built-in Windows feature that can boost startup times significantly. It does so by saving an image of the loaded kernel and drivers to the ‘hiberfile’ before the computer shuts down. By doing so, Windows can load up faster the next time you turn on your PC. To enable Fast Startup, navigate to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Choose what the power button does > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Turn on fast startup. Enabling this feature should provide a noticeable improvement in startup times.

2. Limit Startup Applications:

Many applications by default are set to start up automatically when your system boots, which can greatly increase boot times. To manage these, use the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc and navigate to the Startup tab. A list of all the applications that are set to start upon boot will be displayed, along with their impact on startup times. From here, you can disable any non-essential applications from starting up with your system, which can help speed up the boot process.

3. Update Drivers and System Files:

As mentioned earlier, outdated system drivers can be a reason for slow startup times. Regularly updating these drivers can improve startup speed. This could involve graphics drivers, network adapter drivers, or even system firmware. You can typically update your drivers through the Device Manager utility.

4. Clear Disk Space:

If the system disk is nearly full, this could drastically slow down startup times. Consider using built-in Windows utilities such as Disk Cleanup to free up space on your hard drive. In Disk Cleanup, select the C: drive, and the utility will calculate and display how much space you can free up.

5. Check for Malware:

Malware or viruses can significantly slow down the system startup time. Regularly perform system checks with a trusted antivirus to ensure that your system is free from malicious software and keep this windows problem from happening.

File Explorer Not Responding

There are multiple reasons why File Explorer might become unresponsive or crash intermittently. These may include:

  1. Corrupted system files: If certain system files that File Explorer relies upon become corrupted, this could cause File Explorer to stop responding, crash, or function erratically.
  2. Outdated drivers: Occasionally, outdated device drivers, in particular, graphics drivers, can cause problems with File Explorer.
  3. Conflicting applications or processes: Certain third-party applications or processes may conflict with File Explorer’s operations, causing it to stop responding.
  4. Malware or viruses: Malicious software could affect File Explorer’s performance and stability.

How to Fix File Explorer Issues

Windows 10 offers built-in tools that can assist you in diagnosing and resolving File Explorer issues.

1. Restart File Explorer:

One quick fix for an unresponsive File Explorer is to restart it. This can be done through the Task Manager. Use the key combination Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Look for the Windows Explorer process under the Processes tab. Right-click Windows Explorer, then select Restart. This should stop and then restart the process, hopefully resolving any temporary glitch causing the problem.

2. Use System File Checker (SFC):

The SFC is a powerful tool provided by Windows designed to repair corrupted system files, which could be causing File Explorer to behave erratically. To use SFC and fix this windows problem, open the Command Prompt in administrative mode. You can do this by typing ‘cmd’ into the taskbar search, then right-clicking Command Prompt and selecting Run as administrator. In the Command Prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. The SFC tool will then scan the system files for corruption and automatically repair any problematic files detected. This process might take some time, depending on the system’s speed and the number of files. 

3. Update Drivers:

As mentioned earlier, outdated drivers can sometimes cause issues with File Explorer. Check if all your drivers, particularly the graphics driver, are up to date by navigating to Device Manager. If any need to be updated, right-click the device and select Update driver.

4. Check for Conflicting Software:

On occasion, File Explorer may stop working correctly due to a conflict with third-party software, particularly those that integrate into File Explorer or modify its behavior, such as certain antivirus programs or shell extensions. Temporarily disabling these types of software to see if the issue resolves can help identify if they are causing the issue.

Inaccessible Boot Device

The “Inaccessible Boot Device” error is one of the more serious errors in Windows 10 as it makes the system unbootable. It most commonly appears after a major system update or hardware change. Understanding what causes this issue and how to resolve it is paramount for any IT professional dealing with Windows 10 systems.

Potential Causes for Inaccessible Boot Device Error

One of the common causes of an “Inaccessible Boot Device” error is a major system update. However, other factors can also lead to this error:

  1. Outdated or Corrupted Device Drivers: Often, this error arises when crucial system drivers like disk driver, are outdated or corrupted.
  2. Corrupted System Files: Crucial system files faults, typically those associated with the booting process, can lead to this error.
  3. Hard Drive Failure: In worst-case scenarios, this error can be an indication of physical hard drive failure or issues.

How to Fix Inaccessible Boot Device Error

Thankfully, Windows 10 offers a few powerful tools and strategies to help address this issue:

1. Trigger Automatic Repair:

First and foremost, start by triggering the Automatic Repair feature. This feature works by automatically fixing certain system problems that prevent Windows from starting, making it an ideal first step. To trigger Automatic Repair, power on your system and then force a shutdown during the booting process by holding the power button. Repeat this process two to three times. After which, Windows will understand that it’s failing to boot and direct you to the Recovery Environment.

2. Use Bootrec.exe Commands:

From the Recovery Environment, navigate to ‘Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt’. Here, you’re going to use the bootrec.exe tool, a powerful tool designed for repairing boot issues.

Type and execute the following commands one by one:

  • bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd: This command is used to rebuild the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) that controls how Windows is started. This is useful when the BCD is missing or corrupted.
  • bootrec.exe /fixmbr: It repairs the Master Boot Record (MBR). The MBR is the first sector of the computer’s hard drive that the computer’s BIOS loads when the computer starts. This command is useful when a virus or error has made the MBR unworkable.
  • bootrec.exe /fixboot: This writes a new boot sector to the system partition if the system suspect the boot sector is damaged or missing.

Each command may take some time to process. After executing them, close the Command Prompt and restart your system. In most cases, these should resolve the problem entirely.

3. System Restore or Reset:

If the issue persists even after using the bootrec.exe commands, consider using System Restore. This feature lets you return the OS to a previous state where it was working fine. However, this will only work if you had System Protection enabled and had system restore points created. If a system restore is not an option for you, a system reset might help. Be mindful that a system reset will delete all your files, so use it as a last resort. 

To enter System Restore, click the Start button and type control panel in the search box next to the Start button on the taskbar. From the results, select Control Panel (Desktop app). In the Control Panel, search for Recovery and then select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.

Apps Not Opening or Installing

Whether for productivity, communication, or entertainment, apps form a significant part of the Windows experience. However, users might occasionally face issues where apps refuse to open or don’t install correctly. This can be frustrating and problematic, especially if the apps in question are essential for day-to-day tasks.

Potential Causes for Apps Not Opening or Installing

Here are some common causes:

  1. Corrupted App Files: Just like system files, app files can get corrupted, which can prevent the app from opening or installing.

  2. Outdated Operating System or App: Sometimes, an outdated operating system or specific app can cause compatibility issues, preventing the app from opening or installing.

  3. Insufficient Disk Space: Lack of available storage on the system can also prevent an app from installing correctly.

  4. App Conflicts: Certain apps might conflict with other software on your system, leading to issues when opening or installing.

How to Fix Issues with Apps Not Opening or Installing

Thankfully, Windows 10 provides several tools and features designed to help troubleshoot and resolve app-related problems:

1. Use the Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter:

Windows 10 includes a dedicated built-in troubleshooter for resolving problems with Windows Store Apps. To access this troubleshooter, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Store Apps, then click ‘Run the troubleshooter’. This troubleshooter will automatically scan for and fix common issues that prevent apps from working correctly.

2. Check for Updates:

Always ensure that your operating system and apps are up-to-date, as this can often fix compatibility issues that might be preventing an app from opening or installing.

3. Clear the Windows Store Cache:

Sometimes, the problem could be related to the Windows Store Cache. Resolving this is as simple as typing wsreset.exe into the search box on the taskbar and pressing Enter. A blank Command Prompt window will open, and after about ten seconds, the window will close and the Store will open automatically.

4. Check Disk Space:

Make sure there is enough disk space to install the app. If your storage is nearing full capacity, try freeing up some space.

A quick way to do this is by opening File Explorer and under This PC look for Local Disk (C:) or the drive where your system files are stored. If available storage is low, you can free up space by right-clicking on the drive, selecting Properties and then clicking Disk Cleanup. This will remove unnecessary files and create more room for app installations.

5. Reinstall the App:

If the app is installed but refuses to open, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the app. To uninstall an app, right-click on it from the Start menu and select ‘Uninstall’. You can then reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.
